Okay since last week was very factual and a little hard to follow, I decide to change this up this week and play a game. It was a trivia game of divination in general with questions about all sorts of divination techniques. The purpose of the game was to show how many different tools can be used in divination. I really wanted to spark people's interest with it. The group had a lot of fun.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

This meeting was about Tarot, a form of divination or fortune telling. Since a tarot deck consists of 78 cards, I decided to break it down and only talk about the Major Arcana. The Major Arcana  consists of 22 cards. During the meeting we went through the meanings of each card.

Today was the first day of the semester and we discussed the afterlife. (such a light topic huh?) We first talked about an African tribe called the Hadza who really do not have a concept of afterlife. Then we talked about karma and reincarnation, followed by ghosts, and finally the Aztecs' view of afterlife. As interesting as all that is, the main purpose of the discussion was to get the members thinking about their beliefs on the afterlife which they were welcome to share with the group.

Today we talked about Shinto.  Shinto comes from Japan.  They worship supernatural beings called Kani.  There are an infinite number of deities and many have been incorporated from Buddhism.  Demonic, vengeful spirits are called Oni.  They have big horns and green, red or blue skin.  Animal spirits can posess people.  The most feared animal spirit is the Fox Demon.  An evil spirit --> Obake --> Ghost --> Cause Harm and can be driven off with the right rituals.  All phenomena are thought to posess rough/gentle (negative/positive) characteristics.  A person's soul becomes a Kami after the body dies.  Sacred Texts include Kojiki (oldest surviving text, and it is written in Japanese) and the Nihonshoki "Chronicles of Japan" (I believe it is written in Chinese?...)

Wa = "Benign Harmony" --> Anything that disrupts this is bad, and the group is considered to be more important than the individual.

Mural - we will keep the basic design, but we will be doing different mediums for each individual square.  We will request funds.

Today we talked about Religious Tolerance. The timing of this meeting could not have been better because Monday and Tuesday (today) there were protesters outside the campus library. Unfortunately, the protestors were very rude and insulting to all religions other than their own. Needless to say to gave us a great discussion of how important religious tolerance is, how to promote religions the right way, and how to deal with those who are insulting and will not listen about other religions. Great job guys.

This week we worked on our Poster board, but we didn't finish it, so it's still a work in progress that the Vice President and I will finish as bring to the group soon.

Thursday, September 13, 2007

Attendance: Nikki, Keebler, Amber, Patty, and Natalie (Guest!)

We went over some etiquette for the group at meetings.

What is Paganism?

We went over others definitions

Online Definitions...

Merriam-Webster Dictionary = bad definition

Religious Tolerance Definition = all etymology

TheFreeDictionary.com = a MUCH better definition

Our own definition of Paganism:

1. Usually a polytheistic religion but can include nature worship
2. Not any of the Abrahamic Religions
3. Does NOT include Atheism or Agnostic Traditions

Ideas for Topics to talk about

1. Crowley and Other Traditions
2. Magick (this is the topic for next week)
-What is magick?
-Other's views on magick
-Patty might be able to get a survey of what other people on camput think

3. Quantum Physics

get a reading list to Nikki with books about magick that you like

If I missed anything, please let me know

See Ya’ll next week!
